Within the fortified walls of the city, between cheap red wine bars and fake English pubs, four disenchanted droogies drag their Converse trainers, chewing up their future. They will become Asyl, an explosive mix of Sex Pistolss shrapnels, Joy Division splinters and bits of Bowie...
Already fueled by fire in their blood, Asyl drop out their teenage years with a few demo tapes, succeeded by an intimate, clumsy, self-produced CD that represents their first inevitable step towards maturity.
And then? Woe betide the vanquished. And lady luck favours genuine destinies, real rock'n'roll bands, the fragrance of offerings and the smell of fierce determination. Shoved in a recording studio, the sexy, raging quartet ripped garage-punk open, disclosing their true lustful, deviant, obsessive colours.
Their set includes howling anthems to early years doubts, violent, contorted lampoons craftily carved, descents into articulated, sonic shadows. Tracks like 1975, Pierres Brulantes, Hiroshima Mis à Mort or Sex Beat (the Gun Club's cult track revisited) exploded in the face of The Distillers (at the Elysée Montmartre), The Darkness (at the Olympia) and Blink 182 (at the Paris Zénith)... Now with funds from the FAIR (France's most sought-after support fund for promising young bands) in their pockets, the boys have opened The Stranglers' long tour in November 2004, before springing up under the nose of the Toy Dolls at the Elysée Montmartre and at Bars en Trans', in Rennes, on December 3rd.
This preceded the official release of a 4-track EP in April on Because Music, which demonstrates their heartily ability to set down to business and gives a perfect acccount of the band's amazing stage performances. Led by Mathieu Lescop, a wild frontman torn between punk-rock, coldwave and Swedish garage, Antoine de Saint-Antoine, Benjamin Freidline et Nicolas Freidline show prodigious coherence, forming up one solid, unshakeable cemented whole.
Asyl is on its way, free of arrogance and special effects, with their electric angel's faces, ready to storm up the stage.
Dressed in white, with their hair in a mess, they radiate with bona fide elegance.
